Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance characteristics of a refrigerator through the experiment of optimizing a small capacity refrigerating system with s multi-evaporator cycle and to achieve high efficiency technology. The multi-evaporator cycle can be categorized into single-circuit multi cycle and two-circuit cycle. Two-circuit cycle may be divided into bypass-circuit multi cycle and parallel-circuit multi cycle. Many technical tasks lie ahead for the application of these two-circuit cycles and parallel-circuit cycle on refrigerating system. The most important tasks are to minimize the size and the number of the components and to secure the control logic for the two-circuit cycle. A bench scale refrigerating system was designed and constructed to estimate the performance of the multi-evaporator cycle. This study consisted of three parts: comparative study between single-circuit cycle and two-circuit cycle, experiment for analyzing the performance characteristics of the bypass-circuit cycle, and experiment for possible demonstration of efficiency by adopting parallel-circuit multi cycle. The comparative study between the single-circuit cycle and two-circuit cycle showed 10.8% deviation in COP varied with the refrigerant charge and compressor speed. Additional equipment was designed and installed to increase the efficiency of the bypass-circuit multi cycle and a correlation of expansion valve was developed. The performance of the bypass-circuit cycle increased by adopting the parallel-circuit multi cycle. The performance of each modified cycle was represented in detail in this study.
